Flesh and Spirit

Have you ever done something and wondered afterward, "Why did I do that?" You knew better. You wanted better. And yet — there you were. What happened?

Or maybe you've experienced the opposite: a moment where you chose patience over anger, forgiveness over bitterness, peace over panic — and you surprised even yourself. Where did that come from?

The answer to both questions is the same. And the Apostle Paul put his finger on it nearly two thousand years ago.

Two Minds Within You

I propose that every person carries two minds — one physical and one spiritual. These two natures are constantly at work inside you, pulling in different directions, each offering a completely different way of seeing and responding to the world.

Think about it this way. When someone wrongs you, the flesh mind says "get even." The spiritual mind says "forgive." Same situation — two completely different responses. Which one wins depends entirely on which mind you have been feeding.

Our first and most important choice is this: which mind will we live by? If we live by the flesh, we use our natural mind to make decisions guided by instinct and self-interest. If we live by the Spirit, we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into the truth of God's will for our lives.

When the flesh is in control, we are subject to the old nature — and that nature will make bad decisions. But when we live by the Spirit, we are influenced by the Holy Spirit, and He will guide us toward choices that line up with God's best for us.

How Temptation Works

I've had to cast down thoughts I'm not proud of. We all have. Have you ever wondered where those thoughts came from — ideas and impulses that seemed to appear from nowhere? Thoughts you never went looking for but suddenly found yourself wrestling with?

Here is the truth: those thoughts come from Satan and his minions. God's creation is good — it is the corrupting and twisting of good things that is evil. The enemy does not create; he corrupts. He takes the good things God made and whispers lies about them until they look like something worth chasing.

"But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." — Romans 13:14

When an evil thought enters your mind, you face a fork in the road. You can entertain it — turn it over, let it grow — and slowly lose the battle. Or you can cast it down the moment you recognize it for what it is: a lie that contradicts what God says is true.

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:5

How to Win — Step by Step

The victory is not complicated. It follows a pattern you can learn and practice until it becomes second nature:

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." — Romans 12:2

When you renew your spiritual mind, you step into the realm of the Spirit — and the pull of the flesh loses its grip on you. You win not by white-knuckling your way through temptation, but by starving it of the attention it needs to survive.

So — Do We Have Free Will?

Yes. I believe with everything in me that we have free will. And it begins with one choice: who will you follow?

Every day you wake up, you are casting a vote — not with your words, but with your attention. What do you feed your mind? What do you meditate on? What do you give your hours to? Those daily choices add up to a life lived either in the flesh or in the Spirit.

If you choose the world, you don't stand a chance against a Devil who is a liar, a deceiver, and whose only goal is to destroy your soul. But if you choose Christ — if you crucify the flesh and allow Him to live through you — you are no longer fighting alone. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work in you.

You are not a slave to your flesh. You are not a prisoner of your past decisions. You have been given real power — through Christ — to choose differently. To recognize the lie. To cast it down. To renew your mind. To live in the Spirit.

And here is the grace in all of this: Christ already paid for every time you chose wrong. Every failure, every bad vote, every moment you fed the flesh instead of the Spirit — covered. Today is a new day. Today is a new vote.
