How Big Is the Universe?
If you left earth on January 1st in a spaceship traveling at the speed of light — 186,000 miles per second — it would take you 8 minutes and 19 seconds to reach the sun, and 5 hours and 31 minutes to pass Pluto. After 5 years, on April 19th, you would reach Alpha Centauri A — the closest star in our galaxy. And we are only 10 light years into our journey.
At about 100,000 light years we are able to see the spiral of the Milky Way galaxy. There are an estimated 7 × 10²² stars in the universe — and yet, God calls them all by name.
How Small Is the Universe?
🥜 If a peanut represented one atom, the number of atoms in a single strand of hair would fill more than every outdoor stadium in the United States.
🔬 The smallest object visible under a microscope contains more than 10 billion atoms.
🏟️ If an atom were the size of a football stadium, its nucleus would still be no larger than a grain of sand.
I have always been fascinated by these comparisons. I can scarcely comprehend the magnitude of these examples. How can our physical mind possibly understand these ideas? I ask you — is it your mind, or your spirit, that tries to comprehend these concepts?
I would submit that only your spirit can do these concepts justice. And it is God who says:
"Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse." — Romans 1:19–20
The Flesh Quotient
Our fleshly mind can only reason like any animal — like a computer, analyzing data and making logical conclusions. If your mind is in control of your life, that is how you live. Your flesh quotient is high.
But if your spirit is in control, you go beyond what the fleshly mind can see and comprehend. Your spirit is the connection between the invisible things of creation and its Creator. When you are touched by the Lord in the spirit, there is an energy released that defies understanding.
Your flesh quotient is too high if you get bothered trying to comprehend these concepts. Look at your life closely if you are caught up in this world and its petty, holographic so-called realities. God wants you for a purpose that transcends your worldly existence.
"Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man." — Ecclesiastes 12:13
The True World Is Spiritual
God doesn't see your flesh — He sees and cares about your Spirit. If you could only grasp the vision of how small you are in the universe, and yet God doesn't see you as a lowly servant, but as a beloved child. He loves you with a perfect love. His heart breaks when you hurt. His heart rejoices when you rejoice. He cares.
This is the truth that Satan tries to hide from your spirit. Satan makes you think this fleshly world is the truth and the spirit is the lie.
"But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth." — John 4:23–24
The true world is the Spiritual world. You can't have fellowship with Christ in the flesh. What is your percentage of flesh? The higher the flesh quotient, the lower the spirit quotient.
"For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing." — Romans 7:18
When your flesh world is bigger than your Spirit world you become separated from God. Satan attacks the flesh. Flesh is enmity with God. As you expose Satan's lies, your spirit man gets larger, your hunger for God's truth grows, and with that comes knowledge.
"For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:4–5
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." — Ephesians 6:12
A Challenge to You
I encourage you to evaluate your flesh quotient. Ask the Lord boldly to help you rip the blinders away so you may see clearly the truth before you.
In the universe of the flesh we are small. In God's universe — in the spirit of His likeness — we are huge. Why settle for the accomplishments of the flesh when you can have the universe of God's will for your life?
I challenge you to seek the highest spiritual quotient you can reach. Reach out to the Lord with determination to obtain that spiritual relationship on a level you have not even imagined. Then you will experience how big and how small your Creator's universe really is.
This world is too small. Why settle!
